Background:

The meteoric rise of Devdutt Padikkal is one of the biggest success stories in the recent seasons of the Indian Premier League. In a span of a couple of years, Padikkal went from a relatively unknown uncapped player sold at base price to batting one-drop for India albeit in a second-string lineup.

Padikkal made his first-class debut for Karnataka in the 2018/19 season of the Ranji Trophy. He played 5 matches scoring 258 runs at an average of 25.80. The following year, he made his List-A debut for Karnataka in the 2019/20 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He finished the tournament as the top scorer with 609 runs at an average of 67.66 with 2 centuries and 5 half-centuries in 11 matches. A few months later, he made his T20 debut in the 2019/20 season of Syed Mushtaq Ali. Once again, Padikkal finished top of the run-getter charts ahead of seasoned campaigners with 580 runs. He scored 1 century and 5 half-centuries in 12 games with an average of 64.44. Moreover, his strike rate of 175.75 turned few heads.

IPL Career:

Padikkal was purchased by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) ahead of the IPL 2019. He had made his First-Class debut a few months before the auction but was yet to make his debut in limited-overs cricket. Despite RCB finishing bottom of the league table, Padikkal did not get to play a game.

However, all was to change in the 2020 season. With the tag of being the top-scorer of two premier limited-overs tournaments in Indian domestic cricket, RCB finally showed faith in Padikkal by having him open the batting in their first match of the season. Padikkal did not disappoint, scoring 56 runs from 42 balls including 8 boundaries. He ended the season occupying the top spot in RCB’s batting charts with 473 runs, ahead of global superstars such as Virat Kohli (466 runs) and AB de Villiers (454 runs). Furthermore, he outperformed his senior batting partner Aaron Finch who had a dismal season, scoring 268 runs at an average of 22.33 and a Strike Rate of 111.20; going past 50 runs only once in the season. In the player auction, RCB entangled in a fierce bidding war with Kolkata Knight Riders to sign Finch who at that time was ranked 2nd in the ICC World T20I batsman rankings. RCB hoped that Finch would fill the void left at the top of the batting order since the departure of stalwart Chris Gayle. Instead, it was a young 20-year old who rose to the task.

The 2021 season of IPL has been a mixed bag for Padikkal so far. He has got starts in almost all innings but has gone on to make an eye-catching score only once so far. In a match against Rajasthan Royals, chasing 180 to win, Padikkal the future of Indian cricket came together with Viral Kohil – the present of Indian cricket to complete an astonishing chase. RCB got home in 16.3 overs without losing a wicket. Kohli scored 72* off 47 balls which included 6 fours and 3 sixes. Padikkal outscored the Indian skipper, scoring 101* off 52 balls with a Strike Rate of 194.23. The onslaught consisted of 11 fours and 6 sixes. It will be an interesting watch to see his growth in the remainder of IPL once it resumes in the UAE after COVID-19 suspension.

The major all-format members of the Indian team were in the UK for the final of the 2021 ICC World Test Championship. In the ODIs, Padikkal did not feature in any of the matches despite Indian winning the first two matches and wrapping up the series. However, he did feature in the T20Is, scoring 29 runs (23 balls) and 9 runs (15 balls) as Sri Lanka went on to win the series 2-1.
